What is gnosis?

Gnosis: (Greek γνώσις) knowledge.

  1. The higher meaning of Gnosis is knowledge from experience, especially experience of divinity or that which is beyond the five senses.
  2. Gnosis can also refer to the tradition that embodies the core wisdom or knowledge of humanity, which has adopted many names and appearances according to culture, time, and place.

The Greek word Gnosis (γνῶσις) implies genuine knowledge of the truth. To understand truth, one must experience it. This is why real spirituality is based on one's own effort to experience the truth. Experience is gained by expanding the capabilities of our consciousness.

In order to understand what we experience, we must study the experiences of others. For this, we prefer to rely on those who have the qualities we wish to embody ourselves: compassion, profound love for all beings, insightful wisdom, brilliant intelligence, and radiant joy. So we study the greatest human beings and their legacies, in every field of understanding: philosophy, science, art, and religion.

Vm Samael Aun Weor

His name is Hebrew סמאל און ואור, and is pronounced “sam-ayel on vay-or.” You may not have heard of him, but Samael Aun Weor changed the world.

In 1950, in his first two books, he became the first person to reveal the esoteric secret about sex that was hidden in all the world’s great religions, and for that, accused of “healing the ill,” he was put in prison. Nevertheless, he did not stop. Between 1950 and 1977 – merely twenty-seven years – not only did Samael Aun Weor write over sixty books on the most difficult subjects in the world, such as consciousness, kabbalah, physics, tantra, meditation, etc., in which he deftly exposed the singular root of all knowledge — which he called Gnosis — he simultaneously inspired millions of people across the entire span of Latin America: stretching across twenty countries and an area of more than 21,000,000 kilometers, founding schools everywhere, even in places without electricity or post offices.

During those twenty-seven years, he experienced all the extremes that humanity could give him, from adoration to death threats, and in spite of the enormous popularity of his books and lectures, he renounced an income, refused recognitions, walked away from accolades, and consistently turned away those who would worship him. He held as friends both presidents and peasants, and yet remained a mystery to all.

“I do not follow anyone; therefore no one should follow me.”

—Samael Aun Weor, Practical Astrology

When one reflects on the effort and will it requires to perform even day to day tasks, it is astonishing to consider the herculean efforts required to accomplish what he did in such a short time. But, there is a reason: he was a man who knew who he was, and what he had to do. A true example of compassion and selfless service, Samael Aun Weor dedicated the whole of his life to freely helping anyone and everyone find the path out of suffering. His mission was to show all of humanity the universal source of all spiritual traditions, which he did not only through his writings and lectures, but also through his actions.

The Teaching

The founder of the Gnostic Movement is Samael Aun Weor, who completely awakened his consciousness. He said,

"Do not follow me: I am only a signpost."

Samael and his wife Litelantes both sought only to help suffering humanity, by teaching the complete path to awakening, free of dogma, superstition or theory. The entire teaching is based on and directed by the practical experience of the student. The Buddha's words are carried on here: he said,

"Do not believe me: find out the truth of these things for yourself."

This means that there is an emphasis on practice. Only by doing the practices that are taught in the authentic Gnostic tradition will you come to see the truth of the teachings of any religion.

Reading books does not change us in a fundamental way.

Having an intellectual understanding of various theories or schools does not awaken consciousness.

Our interest here is to awaken consciousness, to see for ourselves, directly, personally, exactly what all the great teachers have tried to tell us. We want to understand for ourselves what Jesus taught, what Krishna taught, what the Buddha taught. We do not want to hear another person's explanation, or what this religion says or that religion. There are many opinions but there is only one truth. That is what we want. And Master Samael, through his tradition and through his writings, is seeking to show us in a precise and very scientific way how we can best awaken our own consciousness so we can know for ourselves what the truth is.
